FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva said today that funding gaps to assist herders, agro-pastoralists and farmers in the ongoing rainy season in the Sahel and Horn of Africa total over 110 million dollars. Recognizing efforts being made by donor countries to maintain their international aid, he added that "it is in times of crises that the vulnerable populations need us the most."

The Somali Consumer Price Index (CPI), which measures changes in prices of a fixed minimum basket of goods and services, maintained its upward trend for the fifth month in succession in all regions in February 2011. Month on month inflation increased in all zones, mainly due to the rising prices of sorghum, sugar and milk (Northeast – 9%, Northwest – 6%, South – 5% and Central –2%).

The findings of the FSNAU, FEWSNET and partner post Deyr 2010/11 seasonal assessment indicate that the number of people in need of humanitarian assistance in Somalia has increased by 20 percent to 2.4 million. This represents 32 percent of Somalia's 7.5 million people. Failure of the Deyr seasonal rains linked to prevailing La Niña event affecting Somalia, caused a severe water crisis in most parts of the country with the exception of north-western regions.
