African Workshop Prepares Position for AEWA MOP 5biodiversity-l.iisd.org | 17 May 2012The African preparatory workshop ahead of the fifth Meeting of the Parties (MOP 5) to the African-Eurasian Migratory Waterbird Agreement (AEWA) helped African countries consolidate common positions on issues of relevance to Africa. The meeting was attended by 25 different African countries, and worked to finalize the draft AEWA Plan of Action for Africa.

The 64th issue, containing data for the years 2006-2010, is now available. The compilation is based on country submissions and includes the volume of production, volume of trade, and value of trade in forest products.

The new guidelines aim to promote food security and sustainable development by improving access to resources and protecting stakeholders' rights.

It highlights the importance of ecological networks for migratory animals and seeks to demonstrate that collaboration between different countries is critical to ensuring that migratory wild animals can continue to use their routes.

The results should enhance the development of policies and regulatory frameworks that promote biodiversity conservation and sustainable use of traditional foods, which are often more nutritious and better adapted to local environments than imported foods, the project notes.

This is the first time that the MLS receives material generated by a project of the Benefit-sharing Fund.

The project is designed to conserve over 160,000 hectares for sustainable management and low impact community activities.
