Forest clearing to make way for agriculture continues at a high rate, according to a UN Food and Agriculture Organization report published before the launch of 2011 as the UN International Year of Forests on 2 February. Between 2000 and 2010, the world's total forest area decreased at an annual rate of 5.2 million hectares, equivalent to the size of Costa Rica, states the 2010 Global Forest Resources Assessment.

Africa Loses 3.4 Million Hectares to Deforestation

UGANDA: One million trees for Mt Elgon region

MBALE, 3 November 2010 (IRIN) - A three-year project to increase forest cover and help local communities in eastern Uganda adapt to climate change has been launched. "The planting of one million trees has started to sustain an area of tropical forest in Africa the size of Wales," said John Griffiths, counsel-general of the Welsh Assembly, which is supporting the project. "These trees will not only absorb carbon but provide shade for crops."

KENYA: Mau Forest evictees struggle in camps

Delays in resettling hundreds of people evicted from the Mau Forest Complex in Kenyas Rift Valley region have forced the displaced to endure harsh camp conditions without proper health and sanitation facilities, sources said. I used to comfortably live in a three-bedroom house before I was evicted; now I share a small tent with my large family. I worked hard on my 2ha piece of land and made sure my family was well-fed and clothed, Joseph Tuwei told IRIN at Keringet camp in Molo District.

Angola: Agriculture Ministry Drafts Forests Inventory

The Agriculture deputy minister for forests, André de Jesus Moda, said last Thursday in Luanda that the inventory process to determine the number of forests in the country is being drafted nationwide at this moment.According to him, the exploration in Angola has been carried out in a traditional way by the populations and by some companies that operate nearly countrywide in areas where the greater quality of humid tropical forests are abundant.
