New atlas shows Africa's vulnerable water resources in striking detail

The major challenges facing Africa's water resources have been laid out in striking clarity in a new atlas compiled by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP). The Africa Water Atlas uses hundreds of 'before and after' shots, detailed new maps and satellite images from 53 countries to show the problems facing Africa's water supplies, such as the drying of Lake Chad and the erosion of the Nile Delta, as well as new, successful methods of conserving water.

PEOPLE living in grass-thatched huts near wetlands in Iganga district have resorted to building roofs using swamp vegetation due to the increasing scarcity of grass. The move threatens to reduce papyrus vegetation in Naigombwa and Lumbuye wetlands.When The New Vision visited Naigombwa on Monday, it found that large areas hitherto covered by grass are bare, exposing a marshy surface.

Kampala City mayor, Nasser Sebaggala, has of late been at the centre of a controversy with the National Environment Management Authority accusing him of encroaching on Nakivubo Channel wetland. Although Sebaggala admits occupying a wetland in Bugolobi, he also claims that he is only seeking to protect the wetland from being taken over by developers. He claims that the Uganda Land Commission has leased out parts of the wetland to individuals who have been issued with land titles for plots.

Kampala Mayor Nasser Sebaggala has vowed not to vacate part of the wetland his workers occupied over the weekend. "As long as I am mayor nobody is going to enter this part of the wetland and destroy it. I would rather see trees than houses in this wetland," he said at a press conference in Bugolobi yesterday.The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) had earlier accused the mayor of encroaching on part of Nakivubo land, a proposed wetland reserve.

Uganda: Lubigi Wetland Faces Extinction

Lubigi Wetland, a critical water catchment area in Wakiso District is at the risk of getting destroyed due to increased human activities, environment experts have warned. The wetland, which is home to at least 61 different bird species and a major collection point for water from Kampala, faces threats from deliberate reclamation, agricultural activities and plastic and polythene waste.

Two wetlands- one in Ntinda Ministers' Village, Nakawa Division and another in Ntebetebe Zone, Bweyogerere in Wakiso District-have been filled with soil to pave way for construction.About three-acres of the wetland situated in the valley between the Ministers' Village and Kyambogo University have been discretely degraded with soil and construction debris while another part of the same stretch comprises a completed residential house fenced with two gates.
