Namibia/State of emergency declared: VSO's Namibian volunteers on the front line

Floods and storms are threatening the homes and work of VSO's 54 international volunteers in Namibia including 22 volunteers from the UK. Half of VSO's international volunteers are located in the flood-affected north of the country, close to the borders with Zambia and Angola – where a State of Emergency has been declared. Access to clean drinking water is the immediate concern for the staff and the communities they live in.

It hasn't got its groove back yet, but at least there is some sparkle in the local diamond industry: gems mined in Namibia last year were up 57 per cent on those produced in 2009, and sales generated N$5,6 billion for the year. This meant 32 per cent more money in diamond mines' kitty than in 2009.

More than 1,000 people have been "relocated permanently" from 32 flood-prone villages in Caprivi, as Namibias most northerly province prepares to meet a Zambezi River swollen to near-record size for this time of year by torrential rains upstream. Local media reported that 1,021 villagers from the Kabbe constituency - a low-lying district along the Zambezi River in eastern Caprivi – had been taken to the Katima Mulilo Rural constituency.

Namibia Embarks on Nuclear Policy

Namibia is set to develop its rich uranium resources and intends to pursue uranium enrichment locally. It also plans to build its own nuclear electricity plant. Nuclear energy experts from Finlands Nuclear and Radiation Authority are currently helping the Ministry of Mines and Energy (MME) to draft Namibias first ever nuclear policy, which is to be completed mid-2011, together with relevant laws. Namibia plans to generate electricity from its own nuclear reactor by 2018.
