Conservation charity MarwellWildlife is using business analytics software to help conserve theendangered Grévy'sZebra . The 15-year-old charity has a focus on protecting the rare breed of zebra. It has been monitoring the species using aerial and ground surveys. In February 2010, Marwell Wildlife led a collaborative effort to survey the region of Kenya inhabited by the zebra.

South Africa: Limited Harvesting of Abalone to Resume

THE government has lifted a two-year ban on commercial harvesting of abalone, which will benefit communities on the southwest and west coasts of the country that rely on the product for their survival. The harvesting of wild abalone was stopped in February 2008 to allow it to recover from poaching and the ecological effects of the West Coast Rock Lobster on abalone.

A stark choice faces Uganda and Rwanda over the future of ecotourist trips to visit the rare mountain gorillas, following a new report which warns that close encounters with humans are having an alarming effect on their behaviour.The mountain gorilla is on the verge of extinction, with less than 700 of these species found in the wild. Their very last redoubt is in the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park of southwest Uganda, and in the mists of the Virunga Mountains of the Great Lakes.

Hoima District is said to have the biggest forest cover in the country but most of the forests are also home to hundreds of chimpanzees and baboons. This does not make it a favourite place for farmers to grow crops because the apes destroy them.
